Open Design

Open Design, published by Powerformer, Inc., is an open-source design automation tool currently at version 0.22.2, with 29 released versions documented. Positioned as the open-source alternative to Anthropic's Claude Design, it operates in the developer tooling and AI-assisted design category, converting an existing coding agent into a design engine rather than shipping its own agent. The software auto-detects 16 coding-agent CLIs on the user's PATH — including Claude Code, Codex, Devin for Terminal, Cursor Agent, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Qwen, Qoder CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, Hermes, Kimi, Pi, Kiro, Kilo, Mistral Vibe, and DeepSeek TUI — and drives them through 31 composable Skills and 72 brand-grade Design Systems to produce design artifacts. For environments without a supported CLI, an OpenAI-compatible BYOK (bring-your-own-key) proxy provides the same workflow loop without the agent spawn step. The tool is local-first, running locally via pnpm tools-dev, while its web layer can be deployed to Vercel, and it maintains BYOK at every layer to avoid vendor lock-in. Its stated motivation is that Claude Design, released 2026-04-17 with Opus 4.7, demonstrated the value of LLMs shipping design artifacts but remained closed-source, paid-only, cloud-only, and locked to Anthropic's model and skills; Open Design replicates that artifact-first workflow without those restrictions. A typical use case involves prompting the system for an artifact such as a magazine-style pitch deck for a seed round, at which point an interactive question form gathers requirements before the model generates any visual output, and the agent selects from curated visual directions. The software targets developers and teams who already run coding agents locally and want a skill-driven, self-hostable design workflow with no checkout requirement and freedom to swap in their own agent or model provider.
